Name: Althaea di Fergion
Age: 18
Sex: Female
Althaea in Aesthetic View - Physically, she is a petite girl with soft, jet black hair. Her emerald green eyes usually strike a cheerful impression to people, and her face was full of radiance, making her one of the most approachable students of the Bellato Military Academy.
Althaea's Past - Her parents, being spiritualists, wanted her to take the same path as they did. However, her childhood dream of being a ranger like the one who saved her from the pangs of an Accretian eleven years ago made her object to her parents' wishes. She then passed the Ranger Competitiveness Exam and graduated with high colors.
The Inner Althaea - People see her as a cheerful girl. She always smiles at everyone and has become very friendly, even to those she barely know. Though she only say a few words, her actions express her ideas and emotions. But behind her smiles is her insecurities in her abilities, a fact she wanted to hide from everyone up to this moment.
----------------------
Last day of the fifth month. Bellato Military Academy Training Hall. 1500 hours.
Pairs of hands applauded as an 18-year old girl finished performing her heavy task of shot dodging. Althaea di Fergion wiped the sweat off her forehead after she stood up and bowed at the judges. Many dropped their jaws when she was almost hit by two consecutive shots in the middle of her test. Yet, she exited the training room with a smile on her seemingly exhausted face. She has done it at last. She's going to be one of the people she truly admired even when she was a child.
She remembered the time when she was lost in the Crag Mine eleven years ago. She was separated from her parents when they went on a trip on the Bellato Highlands back then. Fear and anxiety filled Atlhaea when she wandered around, looking for any trace of her parents or her brother. Instead, she bumped across someone
she had never seen in her entire life.
A tall, metallic gray creature looked at her with its beaming red eyes. It was holding a launcher that was almost bigger than its sleek body. The cyborg said words she have never heard in her life, but judging from its voice, it sounded harsh yet rejoicing. Its cold stare pierced her heart. She knew it; she had to run for her life. However, her legs wouldn't move an inch from where she stood. Her emerald green eyes widened as the cyborg closed at her. She couldn't do anything... she was helpless. Althaea shut her eyes out of fear, but a loud sound erupted out of nowhere. She slowly opened her eyes, and was surprised of what she saw.
Althaea came back to her senses when the instructor called out her name. Her heart pounding hard and fast, she stood up and went back to the center of the room along with the other students. Althaea looked at the judges' faces. They all look stern and firm as they were talking in low voices. After a few moments, they had given the results to the instructor. The instructor then said in a clear voice, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I have recieved the scores from the judges! We're about to announce the names of those who passed the deliberation. I would be calling the names in random order."
"Anarion, Ireth." The girl from Althaea's right looked delighted and waved at the audience as her name was mentioned.
"Mineator, Tari." The girl beside Ireth jumped up and down, but the instructor gave her a don't-cause-havoc-in-the-room look. She calmed down, but the smile from her face was not erased.
"Nargothrond, Ereinon... Tinuviel, Tari... Narmolana, Altariel," the next names that were mentioned projected the same reaction as the previous two. One by one, the students celebrated their success in the test. However, Althaea's name was not yet mentioned. Panic struck her. Would she make it? She did everything she can though, and she thought it was almost perfect. Maybe she expected too much, she said to herself. Tears were starting to flow from her eyes at the thought of it. As the strings of hope started to fade, the instructor called out the last name.
"And the last one... give a hand to di Fergion, Althaea! Congratulations to all passers! You are now accredited rangers of the Bellato Federation!"

"I did it... I did it... I did it..."
The sun has set and everyone in the Training Hall has left with traces of delight on their faces. Almost every student has passed the Ranger Competitiveness Exam, and each of them is starting to head at the Hall of Freedom for the Victory Party.
"I did it... I did it... I did it..."
Althaea was humming those words softly as she passed the Fountain of Sheba. As she went up the dormitory stairs, she heard a voice - a voice so familiar she grinned as soon as she turned around.
"Hey, you did great there, Althaea."
"Yves! Thanks, I never saw you watching in the stands. It's really a surprise," she exclaimed. Glancing at her childhood friend's physique, it seems like nothing much has changed in him: he still had the same long, gray hair, beaming hazel brown eyes, and the warm, affable smile. "You haven't changed much."
She remembered her younger days with him in the Bellato Highlands; laughter never ceased when they're together. They almost spent the day chasing each other in the soft, dewy grass, doing "quests" of bravery till sunset, or lying in the rooftops, watching the sky and counting the stars during the night. But ever since Yves turned 16, he was sent to the Bellato Military Academy to become a specialist. Althaea was only 14 then. When Yves left, they rarely had time for each other; it was something both of them miss. Even though Althaea followed him after two years, he had been very busy with his duties as a specialist-in-training. When he turned 18, he passed the Specialist Examinations and graduated, leaving Althaea once again in the Academy.
Althaea sat down at the bottom step of the chrome stairs. "How's mum and dad?" she asked Yves.
He followed Althaea and sat beside her. "They're fine, they said they miss you a lot now. Well, that was two months ago, when I last visited them. I have been very busy, you know."
"I see," Althaea said. Do you think they'll be proud of me when they find out I've become a ranger?"
"You know they're disappointed with you deciding to become a ranger rather than a spiritualist, but I think they'll be glad to hear your success in the Exams..." his voice trailed away as he stared at the open ceiling in the lobby. "Pretty, isn't it?" he asked Althaea. The Bellato ranger remained silent and smiled at the stars he pointed. No one spoke for a couple of minutes.
"So, you're going to the Victory Party, huh?" Yves asked to break Althaea's silence. "Yup, you coming along?" she asked in return. She was hoping to hear a yes.
However, he frowned and answered regrettedly at her, "How I wish I can come with you but, you see I still have -"
Althaea need not to hear more. She forced a grin and said in a rather sad tone, "It's okay. At least you were able to watch. You better get going, or your superior may get mad at you." She turned her back on him and started to climb the stairs.
Yves knew she was upset at him. But there was nothing he can do. They were not the same as they were when they were still kids. He stood up and began to walk, but he suddenly stopped on his tracks and bellowed at his friend, "I really miss you, pal. Hope we can be together in the wars after your graduation ceremony!" He turned red at those words and started to run, never looking back to see her reaction.
Walking slowly at her room, Althaea was surprised what she heard. She decided not to go to the Victory Party anymore. Instead, she put on her nightgown and laid on her bed, looked at the stars for the last time and started to sleep. Tears were flowing from them while everyone else in the Hall of Freedom celebrated their latest achievement.

Bellato Military Academy, Students' Dormitory. 800 hours.
A tiny ray of sunlight crept slowly on the windows of Althaea's dormitory. The warm Wind blew and kissed everything in its way, including the sleeping ranger. Minutes later, an announcement was heard all over the Academy, thus waking Althaea in the process.
"A...on... ooly... redited... Ein..ers... ez... sem...bol... ol... eedom... nits..."
She hadn't understood a single word from the announcement. She shook her head to wake herself up. The announcer repeated her statement, now in a clearer tone,
"Attention newly-accredited Rangers, please assemble in the Hall of Freedom within twenty minutes."
Half-sleepy, she went to the magnificent Hall of Freedom and greeted her fellow classmates with a beam along her way. She still looked cheerful despite of what happened last night. As she reached the Freedom Hall, the rest of the rangers were already there, whispering excitedly. What it was about, she never asked. Instead, she waited quietly and sat on one of the chairs situated inside. She somehow overheard one of her clasmates' conversations, though only some parts of it. The pink-haired girl whispered at her friend, "What do you think are the guilds available?"
Her friend, having gray eyes blond hair replied in a low tone, "I don't know yet. I hope the biggest ones are still open for new recruits..."
"Nah, that's impossible, it would be hard for them to get newly-graduated rangers. They'd rather go for the veteran-types. Sigh..."
"I heard there's a newly-founded guild, I think it's called FriedNuts! Was that even a name!?"
"Err... I think you've misheard the name. It's--"
The student stopped and looked at the entrance. Two people were walking inside the Hall. Everybody else stared at them. The one on the right is familiar to them - he was the instructor who facilitated the Ranger Examination. He was walking stiffly, his sliver-buckled boots gleaming across the marble floor. The person beside the instructor was a silver-haired teenager wearing a navy blue armor, holding a black clipboard with the Bellato Crest in it. Both of them stood in front of the rangers. The instructor cleared his throat and greeted in a booming voice, making Althaea and the rest jump in surprise, "Good morning, rangers! Had a good sleep?"
They merely nodded in reply. It seems most of them are a bit tired because of last night's celebration. The instructor continued, "Before the whole Academy recognize you as full-pledged rangers, you will have an option to join a guild, yes, a guild. There are a fresh sets of them in Federation's Official Guild List and they're recruiting for new members. Oh by the way, let me introduce you to... err... what was your name again?"
The guy in silver hair glared at the instructor, faced the students and introduced himself formally, "Greetings. I am Farell Calhoun, one of the members of Dreadnoughts. I have here the list of guilds open for member applications. To get things organized, please fall in line."
Althaea, who was not paying much attention, stared blankly at the windows of the Hall. Her mind was drifting... which guild would she join anyway? She had never thought of joining one before. But now some navy-blue armor guy is standing in front them, asking them to make sudden decisions. How can they choose well if if they're to give answers in a short thirty minutes? But then the thought of being a guild member sounded grand. Maybe this is a chance to prove her skills. Perhaps she can improve more and get a step closer in becoming as heroic as the one who saved her eleven years ago. She had never forgotten how the mysterious hidden soldier rescued her from the pangs of the cold, menacing Accretian warrior in the Crag Mines. It was the sole reason why she decided to become a ranger anyway...
"Excuse me, Miss di Fergion?" The instructor tapped her in the shoulder, "you're the only one left. Are you joining or not?"
Althaea said blankly, "Ok, ok, sorry bout that." Farell gave her the clipboard and said, "Uhm, there is only one guild available for member recruitment. The rest of the guilds are now filled up by your fellow rangers."
She had no choice but to choose the last guild. She read the name of the one at the end of the list, "Dreadnoughts. Is that a new guild?"
"Yes, it was only created last year. We're in need of new members, see..." Farell gave her a gold fountain pen and asked her to sign.
With the thoughts of the hidden soldier, she took the pen and signed away. Althaea stood up and shook hands with Farell. He greeted her, "Welcome to Dreadnoughts, Miss Althaea."

The sun rose higher four hours later. The weather seemed to be rejoicing with the Bellato students as they prepare themselves with the Graduation Ceremony. Black robes were seen at the Academy grounds, all going to the rows of chairs positioned at the center. The wide, chrome stage was indicating its welcoming embrace on the graduates. Their parents were starting to arrive, having themselves seated at the back and their heads looking in every direction, in the hope of finding their children dressed in a black robe. Obviously, there had been reunions, and laughter filled the grounds. Everybody was elated, except for one.
Althaea was still in her dormitory room, dressing herself up. She didn't bother to rush things up, she knew she won't be having a reunion unlike everybody else. Her parents, both of them spiritualists, wanted her to follow their path. However, due to her strong childhood dream, she rejected her parents' wishes and chose to become a ranger. And because of that, her expectations of their arrival at the Graduation Ceremony was not high. Althaea looked at the clock at her bedside table, "1300 hours, I guess it's time." She left the room and headed to the grounds.
By the time she arrived there, the graduation march was about to start. She waved and greeted everyone along the way and stood at her position. She never bothered to look at the parents waving at the back. "Don't look, Thea. You know they're not coming... you'll just disappoint yourself," she said to herself.
The Academy Commander stood at the stage, wearing his blue military uniform and cleared his voice. He then spoke in front of the audience in a formal tone, "Ladies and gentlemen, to all the parents, instructors, Academy staff, and Guild masters. Today we're gathered to witness the beginning of the lives of the students as full-pledged citizens of the Federation. They have proven themselves worthy for the past years, and now they're ready to leave the four walls of this Academy and face the outside world. Please rise and welcome the new graduates!"
He then called each student in alphabetical order. As their names were called, they looked at the back and smiled at their parents. When Althaea's name was mentioned, she just went straight ahead, never looking at the sides. As she got to her chair, her classmate seated at her left tapped her and whispered, "What were you doing? You didn't even looked at the back!" She answered gloomily, "Why would I? I'm having nobody there anyway." Her classmate suddenly raised his voice and excitedly said, "Are you nuts? They're here! Look over there," he pointed at the seats in the left, two rows from the back, "See? They're here to watch you graduate!"
She couldn't believe it. Her mother, Alyra di Fergion was smiling at her, muttering words at her that she couldn't hear. Gustaff Tyrande, her father, was there too, grinning broadly like his wife. Seeing them for Althaea was more than enough. The rest of the graduation rites continued, and she couldn't help being cheerful at everyone, this time her smiles were as true as they can be.
The Graduation Ceremony ended, and families were bonded together again. Althaea ran towards her parents and hugged them, "I was not expecting you'd come. I thought... I thought..." Tears were starting to fall from her emerald-green eyes when Alyra wiped them off, "Look, it's been two years since you left our home and decided to become a ranger. Your father and I thought about it, and we think you'll do good at your chosen path. Besides, I've heard from Yves you did great during your Exam, and we couldn't be prouder than any parent in the Federation. Congratulations, Thea."
The family reunion lasted throughout the day.
-------------------
Morning followed, and everyone was ready to leave the Academy and begin their lives as citizens of war. Althaea packed her bags and bade everyone farewell, including the teaching staff and maintenance crew. She was sad for leaving her second home, and she thought she'd be missing the Academy for the rest of her life. Mixed emotions of sadness and hope filled her as she exited the gates of the Academy. She muttered in a low voice, "Farewell, Bellato Academy. Thanks for everything."
She then headed to the Dreadnoughts headquarters and introduced herself with the crew. Judging from her academic performance, she was placed under the Scouting and Reconnaisance division of the guild. With high spirits, she began her life committing herself to the Federation and to Dreadnoughts, a commitment she'd hold on for the upcoming years as a ranger of the Bellato Federation.
